I believe that big players in the games space have been able to keep an edge on smaller, independent publishers by doing one thing better than anyone: Marketing. Marketing to consumers, to businesses, and to investors.

As a result, it's harder for smaller creators to compete – so they end up in a brutal cycle that the academic world calls "publish or perish." That is, they must always create new products and content, otherwise they will fade into oblivion and their businesses will fail.

It doesn't have to be like that. And it shouldn't.
